Naznin Headshot

Dear Members of the IEEE Photonics Society,

I am deeply honored and delighted to compose this statement as the new Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Photonics Newsroom. My journey with the Society commenced in 2018, a pivotal year when I presented my first Ph.D. research paper at the IEEE Photonics Conference (IPC) in Reston, VA, USA. It was an experience that marked the beginning of my connection with some amazing individuals who introduced me to the opportunities of volunteering and contributing to the IEEE organization.

My connection with Society deepened as I received travel grants to the IEEE Summer Topicals (IEEE SUM), the IEEE Research and Applications of Photonics in Defense (IEEE RAPID) conference, and the IEEE Photonics Conference (IPC). The year 2019 proved to be transformative, as it afforded me the opportunity to not only present my research but also become an integral part of the conference volunteer team. At IEEE SUM, I had the pleasure of meeting Nicolas Fontaine, a modest and cheerful individual who offered me the chance to contribute as a volunteer for the print Society Newsletter. Under his guidance, I began conducting interviews with the Board of Governors and published them in our Leadership Column, assuming the role of “Student Editor”. My first interview session and featured leadership column with Chennupati Jagadish, then president of the IEEE Photonics Society, marked the beginning of my editorial contributions.

As Dom Siraini took the reins as Editor-in-Chief, I witnessed his exemplary leadership and dedication in transforming the paper-based newsletter into the sophisticated online newsroom platform which we have today. Dom’s tireless efforts paved the way for the success we now enjoy, and I am sincerely grateful for his mentorship. Starting as Deputy Editor and now being entrusted with the role of Editor-in-Chief, I am honored to follow in his footsteps.

Expressing gratitude to the incredible staff of the IEEE Photonics Society is an understatement. I have had the privilege of working alongside remarkable individuals—Juan, Lauren, Lisa, and Kristen—who have played pivotal roles in making my journey smooth and enjoyable.

As I embark on a new journey in 2024, I approach the future of our Newsroom with optimism. I hold complete confidence in my editorial team, the remarkable staff, and the dedication of our volunteers. Collaboratively, we are devoted to implementing impactful changes and introducing fresh editions to our newsroom. Our team is actively working to bring these initiatives to life.

Thank you for this incredible opportunity, and I look forward to the collaborative efforts ahead and contributing to the continued success and growth of the IEEE Photonics Newsroom with passion, dedication, and a commitment to excellence.

Wishing you all a joyful New Year!

Sincerely,

Naznin Akter, Editor-in-Chief, IEEE Photonics Newsroom
