The organization is committed to fostering a culture that is diverse, inclusive, and equitable. In November 2019, the IEEE Board of Directors adopted a new diversity statement for incorporation into the IEEE policies:
IEEE’s mission to foster technological innovation and excellence to benefit humanity requires the talents and perspectives of people with different personal, cultural, and disciplinary backgrounds. IEEE is committed to advancing diversity in the technical profession, and to promoting an inclusive and equitable culture in its activities and programs that welcomes, engages and rewards those who contribute to the field without regard to race, religion, gender, disability, age, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.
This change to the IEEE policy reflects IEEE’s longstanding commitment to ensure the engineering profession maximizes its impact and success by welcoming, engaging, and rewarding those who contribute to the field in an equitable manner.
The IEEE Photonics Society’s leadership and volunteers are committed to creating opportunities to support the participation, engagement and advancement for all in the photonics and optics community. The IEEE Photonics Society is dedicated to taking vital steps to actively showcase how such diversity is essential to innovation.
Approved by the IEEE Photonics Society’s Board of Governors:
The IEEE Photonics Society is committed to providing equal opportunity to scientists and engineers, inclusive of ethnicity, race, nationality, disability, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, religion, gender, age, and/or personal identity. Our policy is to continually improve our practices in order to build and maintain an environment that reflects the rich diversity of the photonics and optics scientific community.

A committee was formed to ensure that the global diversity of the community in which the Society serves is represented in all aspects of organization and that our Society leaders are addressing diversity needs and/or concerns appropriately.
To also grow our community, the IEEE Photonics Diversity Committee has created an inclusive Speaker Database where members and volunteers can actively sign up and be called upon to serve within their technical and/or professional subject areas. Chairs and volunteer leaders use this database to recruit for invited talks, keynotes, panels, subject matter expert news stories, and councils.
