Progress in Semiconductor Lasers

On behalf of the editors, I am delighted to present this special edition of the IEEE Photonics Journal, focusing on Progress in Semiconductor Lasers.

This feature section includes expanded versions of many of the fine papers that were previously presented at the 27th International Semiconductor Laser Conference, in Potsdam, Germany in 2021.

Selected original manuscripts on the topic of semiconductor lasers that were not presented at the ISLC have also been included.

Overall, the very broad range of topics in the science and technology of semiconductor lasers addressed by the ISLC community is well represented in this special edition. Specifically, the accepted papers include excellent examples of progress in high-power and high-brightness lasers, communications lasers and integrated semiconductor photonics, optical amplifiers, silicon compatible lasers, VCSELs, photonic crystal and nanocavity lasers, grating controlled lasers, quantum cascade lasers, mid IR sources, InP, GaAs and Sb-based materials, quantum dot lasers and GaN-based lasers.

We thank the authors for their support of this special issue, and the guest editors and the IEEE team for their hard work in making this special issue possible.
