Chapter Malaysia
Prepared by: IEEE Photonics Society Malaysia Section

The IEEE Photonics Society Malaysia Chapter, in collaboration with the Centre for Engineering Education Research, Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Farbeat Technologies Sdn Berhad, and IEEE UKM Student Branch, recently organized four STEM events during the school holidays. These events included “Innovative Photo Creation Through Generative AI” for Junior (ages 8 to 12) and Senior (ages 13 to 17) students, as well as Crochet Craft workshops for both basic and intermediate levels. The workshops took place from February 21st to 23rd, 2024, at the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM).

These STEM programs have been ongoing since 2022 under the leadership of Prof Ir Dr Norhana Arsad at the Centre for Engineering Education Research. The primary objective is to foster a passion for STEM among students and encourage them to consider STEM careers. Given the declining trend in student enrollment in Science streams, these initiatives aim to cultivate a deeper appreciation for STEM disciplines and inspire students to explore the diverse opportunities within these fields.

In the “Innovative Photo Creation Through Generative AI” workshop, participants had the pleasure of learning from Eileen Tong Hui Guan of Farbeat Technologies Sdn. Bhd. They had the opportunity to utilize the NightCafe platform to create AI-generated images, experiment with various style presets, and develop their skills in image generation. Witnessing the integration of AI technology into photo and image design was both exciting and enlightening for the students, who eagerly shared and presented their creative ideas.

In the Crochet Craft classes, led by Dr Noorhelyna Razali, Head of Programme at the Department of Engineering Education, Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment, UKM, students discovered the mathematical principles behind crafting through the vibrant art of crocheting. They learned essential techniques such as chain, single crochet, half-double crochet, and double crochet, culminating in the creation of a crochet bag by the end of the workshop. The students enthusiastically showcased their newfound skills, demonstrating their creativity and artistic flair.
