Fostering Scientific Discourse: JSTQE Launches Perspective Papers Category

The advancement of science is rarely a solitary endeavor. Progress thrives on collaboration, debate, and a shared commitment to clarity, transparency, and innovation. Recognizing this, under the guidance of the IEEE Photonics Society Publications Council and the editorial board of the IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics (JSTQE), a new Perspective Papers submission category has been introduced.

Scientific progress goes beyond new discoveries; it also relies on critical reflection, methodological rigor, and fostering consensus within the research community. The new Perspective Papers section offers researchers a platform to engage with existing literature, identify technical inconsistencies, physical misconceptions, or interpretation errors, and re-examine results under alternative theoretical models or assumptions. It also promotes constructive scholarly debate on emerging or controversial topics, all conducted with a professional, quantitative, and theory-driven approach.

As photonics technologies continue to mature, reproducibility and comparability increasingly rely on shared standards. Perspective Papers can propose or refine measurement protocols, develop methodologies for benchmarking devices, materials, or systems, and clarify or unify terminology to eliminate ambiguity in reporting, such as defining ambient reference states, sub-ambient operation, or efficiency metrics. Transparency and reliability are also critical to rigorous science, and submissions that document replication studies or well-designed negative results provide valuable insights into experimental limitations, physical bounds, and methodological challenges.

Manuscripts should be focused, concise, technically rigorous, and written in a constructive and professional tone. To ensure accessibility and rapid handling, the journal limits submissions to 2–3 pages, including 1–2 figures, and limit references to 20.
