The IEEE Photonics Society is now accepting nominations for Summer Topicals 2028 General Chairs.
The IEEE Summer Topicals Meeting Series is an international forum that brings together researchers and technology leaders to explore rapidly emerging areas of photonics. Designed as the Society’s incubator conference, Summer Topicals provides an intimate environment where participants exchange ideas, build collaborations, and help shape the future of the field. Each conference typically features 4–7 focused topics and attracts more than 200 attendees.

Serving as a Summer Topicals General Chair is an opportunity to provide strategic leadership for one of the IEEE Photonics Society’s most innovative conference series. General Chairs oversee the technical direction of the meeting by selecting conference topics, approving invited and tutorial speakers, and working closely with Topic Chairs to cultivate emerging research areas with strong growth potential.
The position includes a three-year leadership term:
- Year 1: Chair-Elect, supporting the current General Chair
- Year 2: General Chair
- Year 3: General Chair, serving in an oversight role while mentoring the incoming Chair-Elect;
During their tenure, General Chairs also serve on the IEEE Photonics Society Conference Council, contributing to discussions on conference strategy, technical co-sponsorship, conference planning, and the continued evolution of the Society’s conference portfolio.
We encourage experienced leaders from across the global photonics community to apply or nominate a qualified colleague.
Help shape the future of Summer Topicals and the next generation of emerging photonics research.
