Topic: Webinar on Scaling Optical Fiber Capacities
Panelists:
Peter J. Winzer, Nubis Communications, USA
Kazuhide Nakajima, NTT Corporation, Japan
Cristian Antonelli, University of L’Aquila, Italy
About the presentation:
Optical communication systems form the backbone of today’s communication and information society. Notwithstanding the enormous capacities carried by the various types of fiber-optic networks, the scaling of those capacities is severely lagging the traffic demand, which has led to a “capacity crunch” in optical fiber systems. This problem has been in the spotlight of all major optical-communications-related conferences over the past decade. This webinar complements the November 2022 special issue of the Proceedings which sheds light on the fiber-optic network scalability problems and various solution paths currently being discussed within the scientific community and within the fiber-optics industry as a whole. The webinar highlights promising solutions, opportunities, and challenges in this exciting area of research.
