The IEEE Photonics Society Chapter hosted Try Engineering and STEM Outreach Programs at VISAT Engineering College, Ernakulam, Kerala, India, on July 23, 2022. These programmes are aimed at creating interests among higher secondary school children in STEM education. Teachers and students from nearby schools participated in the event.Dr. T.D. Subash, Global Strategy Representative for India, IEEE Photonics Society, USA, inaugurated the program and emphasized the importance of Try Engineering, and the benefits offered by IEEE membership to higher secondary school teachers and students. The event included a workshop session and started with a welcome speech delivered by Prof. Shyama, Head of the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering.
Sessions on robotics, and coding procedures in electronic devices were taught on Arduino boards. An interactive Q & A session was held, followed by a “Robo Car Making Competition” using a RoboKit provided to the participants. Involvement of students in Try Engineering and STEM Outreach Programs are sought to provide them with engineering and programming skills, and this hands-on experience served as a suitable platform to exercise both. The program further seeks to help them gain confidence, improve their critical thinking abilities, and to strengthen their teamwork capacities. The sessions ended with a vote of thanks to all participants and to the organizers.
