Raising Photonics Standards Through Standards Development

What is IEEE Standard 1547

An IEEE Photonics Society Standards Committee was established by the IEEE Photonics Board of Governors in 2017, covering standards in, but not limited to the following areas of interest: lasers, optical devices, optical fibers, and associated light wave technology and their applications in systems and subsystems, in which the quantum electronic devices are key elements. The IEEE Photonics Standards Committee is responsible for the development and coordination of one or more standards projects including their maintenance after their approval as standards by the IEEE Standards Association Standards Board.

The committee is currently chaired by John Kulick, IEEE Life Senior Member. The Committee currently consists of 17 members, though the group is always open to new contributors. The focus now is on collaborating with Society Chapters on an education series to build stronger relationships with Student Chapters, Industry, and the Education Committee to discuss overlaps and possible collaborations.

Listed below are the Standards Committee’s accomplishments over the last year and since its establishment:

Standards Approved (1): P2066 Guide for Safety Specification of Laser Transmission in High-Power Industrial Laser System (December 2021); New PARs Approved (4): P2999 Ultrashort Pulse Lasers Working Group (June 2021); P3101 Fiber Optic Sensors WG (June 2021); P3111 PHO/SC/LDRRFM WG (Sept 2021); P3112 Photonics EPDA Standards WG (Dec 2021); New Development: (1) White Paper to come from newly established “Fiber Attached Technology” Working Group.

The Committee also assembled a Working Group with the topic of “Laser Devices for Remote Removal of Foreign Material”, which has been of keen interest in Asia/China. Another assembled Working Group targeted industry on the topic of “Fiber Attached Technology” and resulted in the above mentioned proposed White Paper.

In an effort to identify potential new projects, the Committee has launched a Study Group to take a strategic approach to review and recommend likely candidates for projects.

In addition, the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE SA) Industry Connections (IC) program, within the parent-IEEE, helps incubate new standards and related products and services by facilitating collaboration among organizations and individuals as they hone and refine their thinking on rapidly changing technologies.

The IC program offers an efficient, economic environment for building consensus and producing shared results. Industry Connections empowers groups with a customizable menu of IEEE and IEEE SA resources to produce “fast-track” content and deliverables such as: Proposals for standards; White papers; Peer-reviewed guides and position papers; Conferences, workshops, and other events; Databases and registration services; Software, tools, and web services; Other jointly developed results, such as software, tools, and web services.

There is also an IEEE SA Training + Development Group that has rolled out online courses available for free. The courses provide Working Group Chairs on Standards fundamental steering and copyright policies but also provides information to anyone interested in participating in IEEE Standards processes.
