As hardware platforms such as AI accelerators, intelligent machines, and distributed sensor networks scale, the industry is increasingly seeking deep technical differentiation — not just software or business model innovation, but systems that embody rigorous engineering, manufacturability, and industrial scalability. This intersection of technical depth and commercial need is commonly referred to as Hard Tech.
Photonics is often central in these systems. Yet translating photonics innovations from research labs into scalable ventures frequently encounters gaps that are not purely technical: understanding capital dynamics, meeting manufacturing partners, aligning with industry roadmaps, and building cross-disciplinary teams with market focus.

Why the Hard Tech Venture Summit Exists

The 2026 Hard Tech Venture Summit Series
To strengthen connections between deep technical communities, including photonics, and the broader venture ecosystem, IEEE Entrepreneurship, in partnership with IEEE Systems Council, is organizing the 2026 Hard Tech Venture Summit series, a curated set of events in key innovation hubs.
The series begins in Silicon Valley (April 16–17, 2026, at SRI International) — a location symbolic of research translation and systems innovation. The Silicon Valley Summit brings together early-stage Hard Tech startups (pre-seed through Series A) and Hard Tech investors who understand engineering, capital requirements, and system-level complexities.
Following Silicon Valley, the 2026 circuit will extend to Boston (June 10-11, 2026) and Toronto (October 20-21, 2026), reflecting geographically diverse ecosystems with strong research capabilities and venture activity.
The Summit’s curated format ensures that both startups and investors participate with clear relevance: all attendees are reviewed by the Hard Tech Investors Committee, and discussions are organized around themes that resonate with engineered systems, manufacturability, and commercialization strategy.
