Participate in UNESCO’s Global Survey on Quantum Science & Technology

Quantum Survey

As part of the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ) in 2025, UNESCO is launching an important initiative to gather global insights on the research, infrastructure, and workforce development in quantum science. The Global Survey on the Research Status and Infrastructure in Quantum Science and Technology aims to assess the current landscape of quantum research, education, policy, and strategy across nonprofit associations, with the goal of fostering global collaboration and advancing the potential of quantum technologies.

Why is Quantum Science Important?

Quantum science is rapidly evolving, offering transformative potential for industries across the globe, from computing and communication to healthcare and energy. The importance of quantum science in achieving the United Nations’ Agenda 2030 and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) was underscored in Resolution A/RES/78/287, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on June 7, 2024. This resolution officially proclaimed 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ), further highlighting the critical role of quantum science in addressing global challenges.

Quantum science’s transformative capabilities in solving complex issues—such as climate change, sustainable development, and equitable access to technology—make it essential to the achievement of the SDGs. But while progress is accelerating in some regions, gaps persist, particularly in the Global South. These disparities in research capacity, technological adoption, and educational access could exacerbate global inequalities. The Quantum Divide poses a risk of further widening the gap in technology development and societal advancement.

UNESCO’s Role and the Global Survey

As the lead agency for IYQ, UNESCO is committed to ensuring that advancements in quantum technologies serve humanity equitably. In collaboration with IBM and the Unitary Foundation, UNESCO is launching the Global Survey to assess the current status of quantum science and technology. This survey is part of the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development (IDSSD), which UNESCO is leading to drive efforts toward sustainable science and technology solutions.

The survey will gather valuable insights from a wide range of stakeholders in the quantum field, scientists, researchers, educators, innovators, industry leaders, and policymakers. By understanding the current challenges, opportunities, and emerging trends, the survey aims to identify key barriers in the quantum landscape and develop strategies to ensure that quantum science contributes to the SDGs. The findings will support international collaboration, shape policy recommendations, and guide efforts to build capacity in quantum technologies.

Survey Details and How You Can Participate

The Global Survey is now open for participation until April 30, 2025. It consists of 7 sections, and the estimated completion time is approximately 15 minutes. Your responses will help shape the future of quantum research, innovation, and education, particularly in addressing the critical issue of inclusivity in the field.

By participating, you will contribute to:

  • Identifying challenges and opportunities within the quantum science and technology ecosystem.
  • Exploring approaches for ensuring quantum research contributes to achieving the SDGs.
  • Strengthening international cooperation in quantum science and technology.
  • Supporting capacity-building initiatives in both developed and developing regions.

How to Get Involved

The International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ) presents a unique opportunity to raise global awareness, foster international collaboration, and ensure that quantum technologies are accessible to all, helping to shape a sustainable future. Your participation in the Global Survey is a crucial step in this global effort, contributing to the equitable growth of quantum science and its potential to address some of the world’s most pressing challenges.
