The IEEE Photonics Society Student Branch at Chandigarh University, India led efforts within their chapter to inspire curiosity, sharpen skills, and foster a culture of innovation among students across disciplines. Through a rich and multidisciplinary series of events, from technical quizzes to ideathons and expert lectures, the chapter set a clear vision: to promote scientific literacy, cultivate leadership, and empower students to engage meaningfully with optics, photonics, and sustainability.

Where Light Meets Purpose
The chapter’s programming was guided by a multifaceted goal to ignite student interest in core optics and photonics concepts, while also providing practical platforms to apply knowledge to real-world challenges. Signature events like “Quizzing for Better Knowledge: Basic Optics Quiz” and “Circuit Hunt” brought a playful, gamified twist to foundational learning, encouraging conceptual clarity in an engaging format. Meanwhile, more advanced offerings such as the “Expert Talk on Optical Sensors in Health Care”, “Research Paper Writing Workshops”, and the ambitious “SDG Visionaries Ideathon” provided students with exposure to cutting-edge technologies, global challenges, and professional research skills.
Each event was crafted not just as a standalone experience but as a step in a layered learning approach, building technical acumen, communication skills, and a sense of purpose. The primary goals were to boost awareness of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), foster research readiness, and create inclusive spaces for technical exploration. These goals were met with enthusiastic participation, exceeding expectations in both reach and impact:
- 400+ participants engaged across events
- 20+ volunteers led seamless planning and execution
- Interdisciplinary participation flourished, with students from non-engineering backgrounds making their mark
- One particularly heartening moment came during the optics quiz, where students from outside the physics major took home top honors, an unexpected yet welcome sign of the growing reach and engagement of the Society’s activities

Community, Collaboration, and Mentorship
Beyond the student body, the chapter strengthened its ties with the broader academic community through expert engagement and institutional partnerships. Notable guests, including Dr. Gaurav Kumar Bharti, Dr. Harsimran Singh Sodhi, Dr. Kalyani, and Ms. Nikita, offered valuable insights on healthcare technologies, research methodologies, and interdisciplinary applications, sparking dialogue and inspiring student-led initiatives.
Support from mentors and advisors such as Dr. Sugandha Sharma, Dr. Shivani Singla, and Dr. Indu Gupta ensured each initiative aligned with both academic rigor and student empowerment. The efforts of executive members like Vinit Kamal Gill, Ansh Gupta, Riya Kumari, and others demonstrated the strength of student leadership in turning vision into reality.
The collaboration extended to the Physics Society, whose advisors and student members, like Shubham, Eeshitta Mehta, and Harsh Chhimpa, played key roles in execution, showcasing how teamwork across departments can elevate impact.
These events left lasting impressions, not only through learning but also by cultivating a sense of belonging and ambition. Volunteers shared that their involvement helped shape their professional goals, while many attendees were inspired to join IEEE and contribute further, planting seeds for sustained
