Yuta Ueda received his B.E., M.E., and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering and bioscience from Waseda University, Shinjuku, Japan, in 2007, 2008, and 2011.

From 2010 to 2011, he was a research fellow of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. He joined Nippon Telegraph Telephone (NTT) Photonics Laboratories, NTT Corporation, Kanagawa, Japan, in 2011. After joining NTT, he investigated electro-absorption modulator-integrated lasers (EMLs) and wavelength multiplexers (MUXs) for multi-wavelength type Ethernet light sources. In 2014, he moved to NTT Device Innovation Center and developed InP-based dual-polarization in-phase quadrature modulators (DP-IQMs) for digital coherent communications. After that, he also developed 2m-band distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) lasers for CO2 gas sensing. In 2019, he invented the narrow-linewidth electro-optically tunable reflection-type transversal filter (RTF) laser for digital coherent communications and remote sensing systems. He is currently a distinguished researcher with the NTT Device Technology Laboratories.

He is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Japan Society of Applied Physics (JSAP) and the Institute of Electronics, Information, and Communication Engineers (IEICE) of Japan.

Since 2020, he has been a visiting associate professor at Kyushu University.

For JLT, he is handling submissions on the following topics:

• Semiconductor lasers and modulators
• Semiconductor passive waveguide devices
• III-V photonic integrated circuits
