Tetsuya Hayashi received the B.E. and M.E. degrees in electronic engineering from the University of Tokyo, Japan, in 2004 and 2006, respectively, and the Ph.D. in engineering from Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan, in 2013.

Since 2006, he has been with Optical Communications Laboratory, Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd., Yokohama, Japan, and engaged in research and development on optical fibers and fiber optic technologies. His current research interest includes optical fibers for space-division multiplexing. He has authored and coauthored more than 100 publications in international journals and conference proceedings, and several book chapters.

Dr. Hayashi is a Senior Member of the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers (IEICE); the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE); and the Optical Society (OSA). He received various awards and prizes including the Tingye Li Innovation Prize from OSA at Optical Fiber Communication Conference (OFC) 2017. He has served as a technical committee member for many technical conferences including OFC, OptoElectronics and Communications Conference (OECC), OSA Advanced Photonics Congress, and IEEE Summer Topicals; and as a Subcommittee Chair for OFC 2021. He also served as a Secretary of Technical Committee on Extremely Advanced Optical Transmission Technologies (EXAT), IEICE, and organized the EXAT 2021 International Symposium as the Steering Committee Chair.
