The IEEE Photonics Society is now accepting nominations for the Laser Instrumentation Award!

This prestigious award recognizes outstanding individuals or teams (up to three members) for pioneering developments in laser-based and electro-optical instruments. These innovations must have enabled significant new measurement techniques or processing capabilities in industrial applications, biomedical technologies, avionics, and metrology.

Award Scope:
The award honors key contributors whose work has advanced laser instrumentation, including — but not limited to — classical and self-mixing laser interferometry, optical coherence tomography, digital holography, optical gyroscopes, laser Doppler velocimeters, and diffraction-based measuring devices.

Prize:

  • Certificate and honorarium

Eligibility:

  • Individuals or teams (maximum of three members).
  • Achievements in laser instrumentation that go beyond characterization of optical devices or fibers.
  • The candidate(s) must be an active IEEE Photonics Society member.

Deadline for Nominations:
May 31

Recent Honoree:
Dr. Robert R. Alfano (2024)
Recognized for the discovery of the supercontinuum light source, a groundbreaking advancement that enabled diverse applications and tunable Cr4+ and Cr3+ lasers.

Dr. Alfano, a Distinguished Professor at The City College of New York, has a storied career spanning ultrafast spectroscopy, biomedical optics, and pioneering work in cancer detection methods using Raman and fluorescence spectroscopy.

Nominate a deserving innovator today and help us celebrate those shaping the future of laser instrumentation!
