We are delighted to announce that Shanhui Fan of Stanford University, has been chosen as the IEEE Photonics Society William Streifer Scientific Achievement Award.
For foundational contributions to theoretical nanophotonics, with impacts in resonator, non-reciprocal, topological, and thermal photonics.
Shanhui Fan is the Joseph and Hon Mai Goodman Professor in the School of Engineering and a Professor of Electrical Engineering, at the Stanford University. He did his undergraduate study in physics at the University of Science and Technology of China from 1988-1992, and received his Ph. D in 1997 in theoretical condensed matter physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He was a Postdoctoral Research Associate and then a Research Scientist at MIT before he joined the Stanford faculty in 2001. His research interests are in fundamental studies of nanophotonic structures, especially photonic crystals, plasmonic structures, and meta-materials, and applications of these structures in energy and information technology applications. He co-founded Flexcompute and SkyCool Systems to commercialize high-throughput physics simulations and radiative cooling technology respectively. His recent past awards include a Vannevar Bush Faculty Fellowship from the U. S. Department of Defense, a Simons Investigator in Physics, and the R. W. Wood Prize from the Optica. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, National Academy of Sciences, and American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a Fellow of the IEEE, American Physical Society, Optica, SPIE, and NAI.
